  • Event featuring work of Ahaad Alamoudi runs until Oct. 26

Jeddah: Saudi artist Ahaad Alamoudi’s first solo exhibition, called “Moving Mountains,” is being held at Hayy Jameel and boasts themes that take deep root in the local context.

The opening night recently gathered emerging artists and art lovers and involved a tour led by Alamoudi and curator of Art Jameel Rotana Shaker, which gave an insight into Alamoud’s work over the past eight years.

The exhibition centers on the new Art Jameel commission “Moving Mountains,” a short film that continues Alamoudi’s examination of fast-evolving social and cultural environments.

It focuses on Saudi Arabia’s natural and urban landscapes as sites where attempts to achieve the impossible are infused with humor, absurdity, and hope.

Other art pieces include the latest in Alamoudi’s ongoing video series, in which two talking falcons face away from each other on back-to-back screens, saying “I don’t remember this being here” and “Do you see what I see?”

Another work, “I Was Told Ice Wouldn’t Melt In Heat,” depicts a man in a white thobe who circles a large ice block in the desert for four hours, trying different methods to stop it from melting in the intense heat.

The tour was followed by a conversation between Alamoudi and Shaker, exploring key themes from the exhibition.

Alamoudi, whose work addresses history, ethnography and representation, told Arab News: “(The exhibition) looks at change from different perspectives. The main work is called ‘Moving Mountains,’ which is a piece commissioned by Hayy Jameel.

“It looks at collective power and the individual power to bring about change, whether building something or forgetting something.”

She added that in “Moving Mountains” she explores the natural and urban landscape of Saudi Arabia as a site that is subject to change and open to many new possibilities.

Local and global art experts discussed the Saudi artist’s work and explored the nature of shifting urban and natural landscapes and artistic practices of image-making, among other topics.

The panel discussions featured Saudi-Palestinian artist Ayman Yossri Daydban; Rut Blees Luxemburg, artist and professor of urban aesthetics at the Royal College of Art; Adrian Lahoud, dean of the School of Architecture at the Royal College of Art; and Shaker.

Alamoudi discussed various subjects such as documentation, approaches in understanding the role of the present within an evolving future, notions of past and present, and navigating landscapes in flux.

The exhibition runs until Oct. 26.

Trump blames Biden for Mideast crises, Russia-Ukraine war in Al-Arabiya interview
  • “If I were president, that war would have never started,” he said.
  • Trump said that he would work Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to restore peace in the region.

RIYADH: Former US President Donald Trump criticized Joe Biden and his administration’s foreign policy failures for the wars on multiple fronts saying that if he were president, the Oct. 7 attack on Israel wouldn’t have happened.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Arabiya’s Nadia Bilbassy-Charters, aired on Sunday, Trump said: “If I were president, that war would have never started. You wouldn’t have all those dead people... (and) demolished cities and areas. (We) wouldn’t have had Oct. 7.”

The Republican presidential candidate also discussed the escalating conflict between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Israel, the Russia-Ukraine war and his desire to expand the Abrahams Accords if he wins the elections.

It was when Trump was US president that the Israel signed normalization agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, in what had become known as the Abraham Accords. With Trump as at the White House on September 15, 2020, the accord was by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the foreign ministers of the UAE and Bahrain.

In their bilateral agreements, the UAE and Bahrain recognized Israel's sovereignty, enabling the establishment of full diplomatic relations. Sudan and Morocco followed suit by signing their own agreements with Israel.

Recently, however, Bahrain's parliament moved to end the country's economic ties to Israel following Israel's indiscriminate and unrelenting assault in Gaza, which has left at least 42,603 people dead and 99,795 injured as of Sunday October.

Disregarding growing calls for a cessation of hostilities, Israel has expanded the violence by attacking wide areas of Lebanon in its war Hezbollah and Palestinians and their allies.

US President Biden's failure to restrain Netanyahu has divided American Muslim voters on whether or not to support US Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 US presidential election.

In a press interview on Sept. 27, Trump has said that he could get Israel to end the war, which he said must end "one way or another."

In the Al-Arabiya interview on Sunday, Trump said that he would work Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to restore peace in the region.

Zeenat Enam, an Indian resident joining the celebration at Al-Suwaidi Park on Saturday evening, told Arab News: “I am very happy to be here and see live performances by different groups. India is known for its diversity, secular fabric and being here to see celebration of diversity as part of the Global Harmony Initiative is an amazing feeling.”

Sarry Shaaban, GEA coordinator at Al-Suwaidi Park, told Arab News: “The Global Harmony Initiative aims to showcase the diverse lives of expatriates in the Kingdom, from across countries and cultures.”

The initiative is focused on the diverse lives of residents in the Kingdom, looking at their professional and family lives, social and recreational activities, contributions to the economy, success stories, and cultural integration into Saudi society, Shaaban explained.

“I myself, (when) staying abroad, used to travel to different cities to watch celebrations of Arab culture, not necessarily Saudi celebrations. It is nice that the GEA has made such arrangements here for the different diaspora,” he added.

The celebration will also highlight government and private sector efforts to improve the quality of life in Saudi cities.

Besides India, the other participating countries are the Philippines (Oct. 22-25), Indonesia (Oct. 26-29), Pakistan (Oct. 30-Nov 2), Yemen (Nov. 3-6), Sudan (Nov. 7-16), Jordan, Lebanon, Syria (Nov. 17-19), Bangladesh (Nov. 20-23 and Egypt (Nov. 24-30).

India and Saudi Arabia enjoy a long history of cultural engagement.

In recent years, bilateral cultural activities have accelerated in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
